Lessons from An Etiquette Expert Part 2: The Holiday Hostess with the Mostess

Here is the second installment in our holiday party series with Myka Meier, our go-to etiquette guru. This week, she gives us tips on how to be a great hostess as we spread holiday cheer.

Introductions

Always introduce someone to another with a fact that ties the two people together. To just introduce two people is not enough. Instead, when you introduce people, give them a launch pad to start a conversation. For instance “Jess, please meet Marco. Jess just joined moved into the co-op and Jordan heads up the building’s annual Superbowl party!” It automatically gives them something in common to talk about.

Introduce as many people as fast as possible. There is nothing more awkward than a quiet party. Get the buzz going as early as possible, as it will set the mood for everyone as they enter.

Hors D’Oeuvres

Prepare light hors d’oeuvres with drinks to serve when guests arrive. Never just serve drinks at a cocktail party.

Working the Room

Make sure to speak to and engage all of your guests. A gracious host or hostess will make sure everyone is happy, comfortable and feels welcome.

Covering Your Bases

Put timings on the invitation…whether it be on email, hand written or on the phone. Otherwise, guests may stay long past the party into the night.
